**Description:** This course will be an introduction to to the fields of combinatorial
and geometric group theory. These areas of active research currently constitute the
mainstream in the group theory. They have connections to and applications in other
areas of mathematics, such as topology, dynamics, analysis, and cryptography. We plan
to cover the following topics:

- Finitely generated and finitely presented groups
- Groups viewed as metric spaces and quasi-isometry
- Hyperbolic Groups
- Growth of Groups
- Groups generated by automata
- Iterated monodromy groups

**Prerequisites:** Algebra I, suggested: Topology I

**Grading:** Will be based on the presentation at the end of the course.
